On a beautiful cloudless day a young couple celebrate their reunion with a picnic. Joe Morrissey and his girlfriend Claire are about to open a bottle of champagne when a cry interrupts them. A hot-air balloon with a child in the basket and an adult being dragged behind is trying to crash-land in a field. Joe immeditaely joins in with an effort to bring the balloon to safety, but in the ensuing rescue attempt a man is killed. Witness to this tragic accident is bystander, Jed Parry. Sharing this powerful event burns a devastating obsession into Jed's soul. Delusional and dangerous, Jed's fixation gradually uproots Joe's life, testing the limits of his beloved rationalism, threatening the love of Claire and driving him to the brink of murder and madness. The movie gives us a peek into the messed-up human psyche after a tragic event. But man, I couldn't tell if my brain works in a totally different way or if the characters were just acting illogical in certain scenes. I would handle some situations completely differently, and the version presented to me seemed peculiar to say the least. Big props to Daniel Craig – he really held it together. The whole movie hinged on his performance, and even though I'm not exactly his biggest fan, I gotta give credit where it's due. The story would need to be more convincing for me to give a higher rating. / Lesson learned: Stay sharp. The world's full of some seriously twisted misfits (who might not even be to blame for it).
