The days of the tenants in the old and shabby one-level house on the Pest side of Budapest, which once used to be a low-grade hotel and which, according to the local council, awaits its demolition, are filled with the exhausting and complicated task of getting hold of and extending apartments. The fact that Dibusz Miklós moves back to the building accelerates the flow of events: he is the "nice neighbour" whose efforts, by abusing everybody and hypocritically disregarding the interests of everybody else, are most successful. But only on the surface. After many years two one-time tenants meet in the building now half-way pulled down. One relates Dibusz's failed life and how his efforts for an apartment were all in vain.
