Góz Jóska and Juhos Marika, the main characters in the story that takes place in 1930, love each other. Marika, however, marries Zsiros Tóth Ferke because of her parents' debts. Jóska elopes with the girl during the wedding party. Jóska must make enough money to be able to marry Marika. Jóska, therefore, works as a navvy, then the two of them work from daybreak till nightfall on their tiny little piece of land, digging a well to be able to irrigate their plants. They cannot, however, escape the revenge of the Tóth family who successfully have their newly-dug well damaged. Finally Jóska, in defence of both justice and his friend, becomes inadvertently becomes a key figure in a murder case. He is in prison. The inscription on the gate of the gaol reads "To be released in 1945". (official distributor synopsis)
