The main character in the story that takes place in 1896, year of the millennium, is Szakhmáry Zoltán, who, in sharp contrast with the people around him, is neither a cynic nor a lewd, not even someone with a tendency for showing off his strength. Instead, he strives to become a humane person with enough common sense and modern thinking. His estate, however, is the property of Eszter, his wife, who, realising that her husband has a lover, refuses to sign any bill of exchange, unaware of the fact that Rozika, her husband's mistress, is on the point of abandoning Zoltán as she has far-reaching plans to "work" her way further up the social hierarchy. The party, held on the farm, where all the landowners of the neighbourhood have gathered to have fun, is, at the same time, a peak and low point: the end of love, reform thinking and alternative thinking. In the end, Szakhmáry, having set the house on fire first, commits suicide. (official distributor synopsis)
