English Oh the multilingual versions. :) I finally did myself some good after a while, although I've been struggling a bit trying to understand Jarmila Novotná's filmography. I took some time off and thought about the language versions of her films and it was only The Last Waltz that opened my eyes. In this version, Camilla Horn plays Vera, while in the French and English versions, it is Novotná who plays her, and that makes the whole thing all the spicier because there are no two actresses who are this different from each other. So much is Horn an artist in her own right that in this version, there is nothing to suggest that the role was intended for a singer of Novotná's nature. yet it's a really lovely film, with Adele Sandrock playing aunt to four nieces, Vera, Katinka, Sasha, Saschinka, and Daschinka, and trying to marry off the eldest one. Vera dedicates her last waltz to Dimitri Sarrasow and her whole life changes... Ivan Petrovich is sexy enough to deserve his role, and during the same time period, he helped out Anny Ondra in the Polish Blood version and the next year Novotná had to have him in The Cossack and the Nightingale. Of the other roles, I couldn't take my eyes off the adorable Susi Lanner, what a doll. Indeed, this is the world of Oscar Strauss operettas at its best. ()
