The strongest comedic cast in history has united to become the strangest superhero team ever in Mystery Men. They're a ragtag team of superhero wannabes that includes Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), The Shoveler (William H. Macy), The Blue Raja (Hank Azaria), The Bowler (Janeane Garofalo), The Spleen (Paul Reubens), Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell) and The Sphinx (Wes Studi). When Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear) falls into the hands of evil madman Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) and his disco-dancing henchmen, there's suddenly a chance for the aspiring superheroes to show what they can do in this hilariously funny and thoroughly original misadventure. English Mystery Men is an average, perhaps even below-average superhero movie with a fairly predictable storyline and a narrative featuring a team of lesser superheroes with unimpressive powers ("I shovel well..."). After a crazy villain takes out a famous and fearless superhero, they save the city. So why award this movie more than three stars? Because when I once watched this movie at a friend's house, we got pretty stoned, and I have to say, I do not think I have ever seen a more entertaining spectacle. You laugh at the crap; you laugh at the main protagonists, you laugh at the crazy jokes, you laugh at the dialogues ("I knew you'd know I'd know you knew" try saying that ten times in a row) and you even laugh at the father's skull inserted inside a bowling ball. So even now, years later, when I am not stoned anymore, I still get to have a pretty good time watching this movie. 7.5/10. ()
