Chief Police Officer Miky Miko is a solitary police operative who light-handedly navigates on the verge of law in the wild East Slovakian underworld of the early 1990s. Local mafia gangs, protected by the national secret service “SIS”, businessmen, who obediently pay the gangs their tributes, and the local police force, which is generously rewarded for closing its eyes to the crimes committed by "our" people, are coexisting here in a fragile symbiosis. Miky has learned not to trust anyone. But when he is assigned a young and inexperienced colleague, Igor Molnar, he discovers that they are very similar. Together they dare to bring down the mafia leader, who is protected from the highest ranks of the state machinery. The suddenly endangered system will not take long to react, and a sequence of events lead to the death of Miky's young partner Moly.
Miky decides to avenge his death. He starts a war not only with the local underworld, but also with the police force and the secret service. Alone against the established system, Miky relies only on the trust and help of his girlfriend Simona, and a former colleague Lepeňák, who joined the mafia gangs. The mafia gang and the secret service hire a professional assassin to get rid of Miky, and the game of cat and mouse begins. Losing means death, but as Miky finds out, victory also comes at a high price.

In the 1990s, the police in Slovakia had an unexpected rapport with gangsters. But a pragmatic cop from Poprad and his new partner discover that there are things they can't turn a blind eye to, and blood will flow in the streets. Cop War is a stylish gangster drama with great actors, excellent atmosphere and world-class visuals. Too bad the plot is a bit disjointed and there are perhaps a few too many wild twists towards the end. But it is a high European standard in its genre, and we are not used to that here.
