In the 18th century, Sophie Dorothea (Joan Greenwood) is forced into marriage with Prince George Louis (Peter Bull), an aristocrat destined to inherit the British crown. But after he becomes king, Sophie meets suave Swedish mercenary Count Philip Konigsmark (Stewart Granger) - the two quickly fall in love and plot to flee ngland together.
