English If the English didn’t mellow this movie out the best they could, it would be a pretty brutal drama. A young girl lives in a room that’s about as big as Harry Potter’s closet under the stairs, her father dies and she shuts away and drowns herself in old music genres. Her mom’s a drunk and hopes to score some rich dude. At that point, Michael Caine swoops in, discovers the kind of musical talent hiding in her pantry and decides to sell her into the slavery of the music industry. The young girl played by Jane Horrocks is so shut away that it’s almost unbearable, but at the end, she performs such a beautiful concert that it’s worth waiting for. She obviously has a gorgeous voice and I’m quite surprised that I didn’t know more about her. Over here, she’d be winning all the talent shows and singing with local celebrities in no time. ()
