The Human Condition I: No Greater Love

Kaji leaves for Manchuria to accept a job as a labour supervisor to exempt him from military service. Kaji attempts to improve the workers conditions but he is prevented by the pit supervisor Okazaki his only sympathy comes from the foreman Okishima, his assistant Chen and his wife Michiko. An outbreak is instigated by his enemies after which Kaji is arrested and charged with conspiracy. He is released without explanation only to receive his call to military service.
