This epic World War II film focuses on the final days of the war, when the French attempted to liberate Paris, and the Nazis made a last-ditch effort to destroy the city before their retreat. Using a documentary style, the movie shows the Paris uprising, the German army's efforts to stop the French Resistance, the Allied troops' arrival in the city and their eventual victory over the Germans. I was really curious about this movie; the user Enšpígl has recommended a French large-scale war movie to me that the greatest American movie characters of that era collaborated on and that I had no idea existed. But in this case, it missed the “proper epic film” by a long shot. For example, I understand that the American producers wanted the movie in English. But then the Parisian resistance speaks English and I thought that it was really weird. Especially since I know how nationalistic French people are. To make things worse, they make up for it in individual scenes where they showcase their infinite valor. It’s a pity they didn’t have this valor at the beginning of the war during the Munich Agreement. On the other hand, it’s nice to watch the greatest movie celebrities of the era. And even though some of the scenes create an epic atmosphere, the best performance was by General von Choltitz who soon understood what it truly means to lose a war; and that’s why the Germans never bombed Paris.
