Though the main focus of the story is the daily lives of a small group of people during the post-war Soviet Union, the enduring importance of the film comes from its early science fiction elements. It primarily tells of a young man, Los (Russian: Лось, literally Elk), traveling to Mars in a rocket ship, where he leads a popular uprising against the ruling group of Elders, with the support of Queen Aelita who has fallen in love with him after watching him through a telescope. Alright, it's somewhat political, but when you consider that it was created during a time when the revolution was quite alive and all those ideas weren't degenerated by Stalin, it carries weight. And I must say, some scenes gave me quite the shivers, not because I was scared of their ideological messages, but because they sounded quite epic. However, the best thing about the movie is undoubtedly its visual aspect and especially the costumes, which are beautiful and could actually work in a modern sci-fi as well.
