Students at Hermes's private Commercial High-School are given the assignment, during their commercial administration class, of writing business letters to a certain Mr. Alfred Harvey to Liverpool. Makray Erzsébet, a charming young teacher, finds more entertainment in writing love letters to the same imaginary person, fighting off the monotony and boredom of the everyday school routine. Lévay Magda, one of Makray's students chances upon the letter, which she decides to post. Events now take a surprising turn: not only is Mr. Harvey a real person, he also makes a trip to Budapest, asking the school headmistress to help him find the "culprit". In order to prevent her teacher, from losing her job, Lévay Magda takes the "sin" upon herself. Magda is then dismissed from school, but, instead of falling into despair, she acts as a go-between for a match between Alfred and her teacher, while she becomes the wife of Alfred's nephew.
