Takács Péter and Almády Miett meet during an afternoon tea. They soon get married. News of the outbreak of war reach them during their honeymoon. Péter first becomes a conscript, then a POW. Meanwhile, Miett and Golgonszky Iván become friends. Golgonszky helps Miett in looking after all businesses relating to Péter's present situation. Péter, now a POW in Tobolsk, starts a relationship with Zinaida, a beautiful, lonely woman. Later he attempts to escape, but is caught after being wounded. In Budapest, word gets around that he is dead. Miett and Iván having got married, they and their children make a trip to see Péter's tomb, who is, surprisingly, alive and lives with Zinaida and a few kids, but Miett and Péter somehow miss each other.
