If it didn't end up quite funny in the end, I mean especially in the mysterious dimension, it would still be a much more successful and interesting film for its time. Even so, it is a good combination - the search for gold, villains, a honorable guy, and a phantom work surprisingly well. Plus, John Wayne shows that he really wasn't afraid of stunt performances in the scenes.
