Elsa Andersson grows up on a farm in Sweden at the beginning of the last century.
Her mother dies tragically while giving birth to Elsa’s little sister, leaving Elsa behind with only her father and her brother. Not long afterwards, a housekeeper arrives on the farm - she and Elsa’s father start an affair, so Elsa feels even more alone. Only through her music teacher, Felix, does she learn to understand her wilful and artistic nature. As a young woman Elsa receives the call from an exciting and uncharted field: she becomes fascinated by aeroplanes and enters the new flying school at Ljungbyhed at 22 years of age, as the only female student. The many male pilots are fascinated by Elsa and several of them fall in love with her. She basks in their admiration and in the challenges posed by the aeroplanes. After a fateful love affair she finishes her studies, becoming the first female Swedish pilot. Having recovered from her deep sorrow, she seeks out the exciting milieus of Berlin in the twenties to train there to be a parachutist. In Germany Elsa experiences a new type of love, festivity and cheerfulness. She returns to Sweden full of inspiration. Here, she follows her call and tempts fate with parachute-jumping shows.
