Summer 1978: two couples decide to spend the summer in a remote vacation house in the north of Spain. Hidden away in the middle of a forest, and very much off the beaten track, the house seems ideal for some peaceful holidays. While out hunting, the two men come across an abandoned house and discover a deformed, animalistic girl chained inside. They bring her back to the house, intending to take her to the authorities. Tension with the rural locals heightens when they come looking for the girl armed with shotguns... (official distributor synopsis)

English So well made and yet so pointlessly uninteresting. BackWoods isn’t horror, it’s some sort of rural drama in the style of Straw Dogs, but to have any chance of being interesting, it should have been made in the 1970s, the era the story takes place. Today, it’s nothing but a copy of something we’ve seen a long time ago, and better. On top of that, I’m not entirely sure what the protagonist did in the end or what were her motivations. 60% ()

English There is so much comparison with Scarecrow that I can calmly avoid my planned one and just praise the excellent atmosphere, which is mainly due to the nature, the camera and the seemingly calm pace ready to speed up at any time, and of course Gary Oldman. The ending of the film was very suggestive and at the same time thoughtful. That's how I like it. ()
