Alan Alda plays a classical piano player on the rise who befriends a famous player himself who's at death's door. Unknown to Alda, the guy is a satanist, who arranges to have their souls switch places at his death, so that he can be young again and continue to play piano (thus needing a skilled piano player like Alda to switch bodies with). English The Mephisto Waltz lacks that crucial element that would make it a truly good horror film. That crucial element is an atmosphere that would add a proper dose of tension to the story, where you'd be on edge, anticipating what will happen next. This effect is absent here because you will be able to predict the individual steps that will occur in the plot. It's a shame because in that case, The Mephisto Waltz would have been a great horror movie for me. This way it is only very slightly above average. ()
