Jodhaa Akbar is first and foremost a wonderful fairy tale. It doesn't matter that much that we are firmly anchored in the mid-16th century and the introduction and ending provide a brief historical overview. The way in which the story of Empress Jodhaa and her counterpart Akbar is told corresponds subconsciously to the most established norm of the oriental tale. Even the princess has certain conditions that need to be fulfilled before the wedding, and after it she continues with similar tasks before she completely submits to her emperor.. While he works on the unification of a great empire through progress and diplomacy (rather than violence and tyranny), he has to make a life choice between his own mother and the nanny who has gained a privileged position in his court in the meantime. But the nanny makes a mistake and stumbles while trying to remove the newlywed Jodhaa. At the moment of reconciliation between Jodhaa and Akbar, the only thing missing is the proverbial fly that would help determine which of the beautiful maidens is Goldilocks. And in order to become a truly great and popular ruler among the people, Akbar first goes through the marketplace anonymously to let himself be inspired by what troubles the people most...
