Working-class hairdresser Rita (Julie Walters) enrols for an adult education course in literature at her local university, determined to expand her mind. She is assigned alcoholic lecturer Dr Frank Bryant (Michael Caine), and as Rita's horizons broaden she begins to feel stifled by her home life. He's an aging, burned-out English literature teacher who spends most of his time taking strolls with Johnnie Walker. She's a chatty young hairdresser from simple circumstances who'd like to change her life from the ground up. Together, the two make up one of the most unconventional (and likable) couples. Their spark is so intense that one fears that all the books around them will catch fire… The kind of lovely, melancholy movie that (unfortunately) is no longer made.

Why aren't such films made nowadays?__P.S. I'm gonna go find out who all won Oscars in '83. Is it actually possible that neither the scruffy professor nor the young squealing "student" won?__P.P.S. Aha - Ben Kingsley and Meryl Streep.
