An impossibly handsome Gary Cooper stars as the somewhat cynical Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American enlisted in the Italian army to drive ambulances during the war. Through his doctor friend, Rinalidi (Adolphe Menjou), he meets Catherine Barkley (Helen Hayes), an English nurse whose fiancé was killed at the Somme. What starts as a flirtatious and casual encounter soon develops into something much deeper but can their passion survive the terrible consequences of the war? (British Film Institute (BFI))

English A wonderful experience. Of the many Hemingway adaptations, this first adaptation is one of the best. It’s a film that seemed timeless when it premiered and remains so today. Everything is as it should be. Everyone is in their place (the great Cooper and Menjou, the wonderful Hayes). Everything is authentic, nothing is missing, and nothing is excessive. I recommend adding Love and War to the biography. And, of course, reading the book. ()
