Plots(1)

A middle-aged slacker living in a rundown, graffiti-ridden slum, Daisatos job involves being shocked by bolts of electricity that transform him into a stocky, stick-wielding giant several stories high who is entrusted with defending Japan from a host of bizarre monsters. But while his predecessors were national heroes, he is a pariah among the citizens he protects, who bitterly complain about the noise and destruction of property he causes. And Daisato has his own problems - an agent insistent on branding him with sponsor advertisements, an Alzheimer-afflicted grandfather who transforms into a giant in dirty underwear, and a family who is embarrassed by his often cowardly exploits. A wickedly deadpan spin on the giant Japanese superhero, BIG MAN JAPAN is an outrageous portrait of a pathetic but truly unique hero. (official distributor synopsis)

English At first glance basically a pretty boring mockumentary, but if you imagine the 大日本人 [“Big Japan"] without the 人 [“Man"], it becomes a story about the Empire of Japan and immediately takes on a new dimension. Still, I believe it's a rather hard film to digest. ()

English The film "Dai-Nihonjin" is originally unoriginal, but that is exactly where its charm lies. It is a classic kaiju film, where the battle scenes are actually an arena. But it is also a personal drama, filmed on a camera like a reality show about one extraordinary person. This is such a wonderfully crazy film that I simply cannot do anything else but watch it with delight and rate it very highly. But you have to have the right mindset for this. ()
