The Little Prince

This unique little musical is based on the beloved tale by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. A pilot, forced to make an emergency landing in the desert, has a remarkable encounter with the Little Prince, an enchanting monarch from a tiny planet. Oscar winner Bob Fosse does some limber dancing as "The Snake", comedian Gene Wilder is engagingly timid as "The Fox", and Broadway star Donna McKechnie sings and moves gracefully as "The Rose". English Exupéry's novel is a small literary miracle, full of profound ideas, and although this movie cannot convey all the depth of the work, it is a successful adaptation. Translated into musical form, the film combines singing performances with some good effect sequences (the prince's planet) and one dance number by Snake, performed by film legend Bob Fosse, the creator of Cabaret and my beloved All That Jazz. Overall, this is not a cinematic miracle, but an earnest adaptation of a brilliant literary work that has, for some reason, escaped the greater interest of filmmakers. ()
