Featuring interviews with daughter Nicola Lubitsch, film historians Enno Patalas and Jan-Christopher Horak and filmmaker Tom Tykwer (among others), Ernst Lubitsch In Berlin documents the life of the legendary filmmaker from his birth in 1892 to his departure for Hollywood in 1923. The feature-length documentary is sprinkled with excerpts from Lubitsch's rarely-seen early work (both as actor and director) and offers fascinating insights into the German film industry in the silent era. English This documentary is definitely beneficial wherever it was unthinkable to place Lubitsch anywhere other than in the sterile Hollywood of the late 1930s and early 1940s. However, if you're expecting certain creative reflexes, forget about it. Ernst Lubitsch in Berlin is a tribute to its creator through the mouths of his nearest and dearest. In the end, the most interesting aspects are the contemporary commentaries of Henny Porten and Emil Jannings, its stars at the time. ()
