Plots(1)
Ladd is on an airplane bound for Capetown, South Africa, to find out what happened to the $10,000 he invested in a mine. On the trip he becomes attracted to Tetzel, who is on her way to search for her missing whaler father and wants nothing to do with Ladd. When he finds that he can't get his money back from his crooked partner, Ladd signs up as first mate on the boat Tetzel is using to hunt for her father. As the ship sets out, Tetzel gets word that her father is dead. His partner, Sydney, thinks his death was a suicide. Ladd finds out from Niall MacGinnis, the ship's drunken doctor, that Sydney and Tetzel are engaged. But Tetzel tells Ladd that she has recently broken up with Sydney. The whaling boat joins up with another ship, and Sydney is on it. Ladd tries to get more information on Tetzel's father's death, but a school of whales changes everything. Ladd is assigned to another ship, which is rammed by Tetzel's boat when it is caught in an ice jam. Both ships are abandoned and the crews make camp on the ice floe. It becomes obvious to Ladd and Tetzel that Sydney was the one who killed her father, and a violent fight between the two men breaks out. Sydney is killed when he falls into the freezing water, and with her father's death solved, Tetzel now has time for Ladd. An action-filled story with an unusual setting.
