Whilst on a job, burglar Luther Whitney (Clint Eastwood) witnesses the President of the United States, Alan Richmond (Gene Hackman), committing murder in the apartment of wealthy businessman Walter Sullivan. Richmond kills Sullivan's wife, with whom he was having an affair, and then makes it look as if the woman was killed during a burglary. When Whitney sees Richmond offering Sullivan his condolences on national television he decides to bring him to justice, only to find himself coming under suspicion from police detective Seth Frank (Ed Harris). Whitney is soon being pursued by both the police and Richmond's complicitous secret service agents. (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment)

English Gene Hackman as a cold-blooded president, Ed Harris as a charismatic detective, Clint Eastwood as an elusive professional thief, and Scott Glenn and Dennis Haysbert as elite secret service agents, brilliant casting, no doubt about it. The plot is alright, if we overlook certain simplifications of some facts and focus only on those names, because Eastwood as a director didn't take into account practically any supporting characters, and when he did, it didn't turn out well at all (the hired sniper). The action is minimal, however, Clint knows how to shoot suspenseful scenes – though there aren’t many – and the whole thing is carried out in a slightly unremarkable and almost TV-like style, the acting ensemble is so good that you won’t be constantly looking at your watch.
