Martin Friedmann, a Jewish boy, was born in 1926 in Bánovce nad Bebravou (western Slovakia). His story would hardly be extraordinary, had he not succeeded in escaping deportation to a concentration camp thanks to his exceptional football talent and a few lucky coincidences. Today he lives in L.A. under the name Martin Petrášek and is proud of his Slovak roots.
Why and how did he arrive at this name, and why does he use it today? That and much more in Broken Promise, a story based on true events.

Towards the end it gets a little long (the partisan part is extremely drawn out) with a poorly acting lead actor, but also containing a number of impressive scenes (a rabbi who doesn't want to be a rabbi) and features great sets. Three and a bit.

It is not a bad view of Slovakia during and after the Second World War, there are definitely good scenes here that are emotionally extremely strong, but as the movie continued, I somehow started to not care about what happens to the main characters. Clearly, the first and middle part are better than the last one.
