After years of misery at the hands of the hapless Inspector Clouseau, Commissioner Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) at last feels he has gained the recognition he deserves when assigned to a high profile case to rescue a kidnapped princess. He is offered the assistance of a young gendarme (Roberto Benigni) who acts in a strangely familiar manner, and a meeting with the gendarme's mother confirms Dreyfus' worst fears - his charge is the illegitimate love child of Jacques Clouseau and his methods of detection are just as haphazard as his father's. English This is simply a cinematic tragedy. Roberto Benigni is not even close to Peter Sellers, and unfortunately, he tries to imitate him too much. The film makes do with repeating old jokes and scenes, which only leads to extreme boredom that almost physically hurts. Even Claudia doesn't really save it, not to mention the transformation of Herbert Lom's character, who suddenly becomes a mentor. ()
