Why Wasn't He There?

1944, Transylvania, a small town. Éva is thirteen years old and keeps a diary about the important events of her life. It has been a year since gendarmeries carried off her cousin, Márta, from her birthday party. Her red bicycle is still there at the gate. Grandfathers pharmacy is given to Vitéz Szepesvári, and grandmother is not greeted by the town-clerk. Their acquaintances in the country, where they used to go for pig-slaughters, do not wish to hide anybody. Évas escape is David Copperfield: her only companion is the animated young boy whose fate was so similar to hers. Their friends are carried away one after the other, and eventually it is their turn.
