Deconstruction of the moral imperative and policing as an adventurous romance, at the end of which stands the Truth. This is sadistic wandering, at the end of which is a rational compromise. Ingenious transitions from the hyperrealism of everyday situations to an absurd drama, where the nobility of the intention is broken by dictionary definitions. In the end, nothing makes sense, just mechanical existence in a circle. A brilliant dialectical detective story with a point that pushes the adjective "procedural" above the dictionary entry. This film does everything to get the ordinary viewer to turn it off and throw it out of the window as soon as possible. Indeed, the first half seems like the most deliberate possible waste of celluloid. Later, however, the creator begins to lay his cards on the table and the long-windedness, emptiness and futility of the action in front of the camera becomes a fitting, cynical reflection of the absurdity of the lives of the characters in the Romanian microcosm, and the climax comes with the last uncompromising nail in the coffin in the form of a sarcastic confirmation that gives it a deeper meaning. This film is not easy to rate; personally, I prefer similar films in a more atmospheric and visually more interesting rendering by Jarmusch or Kaurismäki, with more remarkable acting performances. But if you like films that go strongly against the grain, in whatever direction, you are in for a treat. (28/02/2010)
