17 year old Daniel is always getting into trouble, and after one particular incident he finds himself under house arrest for the summer. When his mother goes away on business for a few days a horrifying incident occurs in the house, after which he notices that the house seems to be haunted by a terrifying presence. Dark Summer takes the supernatural terror of classic films like The Shining and Poltergeist and gives it a very modern and disturbing twist, guaranteeing shocks, scares and sleepless nights. It could have been a great thriller, but it's just an average thing that shocks more with some scenes than it captures the overall plot. You can't take it that you want to know what is actually happening, but it's one of those cases where you eventually find out the truth, but it's not what you wanted and what would have elevated the movie to its end.

I almost no longer remember Paul Solet’s début, Grace, and I feel it won’t take long for Dark Summer to follow the same fate. That said, I’m actually rather satisfied with it. It’s a small, forgettable genre film, but it fascinated me in a certain way, it has a weird type of darkness. We don’t get to know much about the characters, the reason for their behaviour gets lost in the dark, the scary scenes are almost hypnotic, the sound design is interesting, the leading female is weird. I also liked the climax and the explanation of the paranormal activity, even if they stumble a couple of times along the way.
