In SADIE McKEE, Joan Crawford stars as the title character, a humble maid who works for the wealthy Alderson family in this 1930s melodrama with many surprising twists and turns. Sadie flirts innocently with her wealthy employer, Mike (played by Crawford's future husband, Franchot Tone), but truly loves her local sweetheart, Tommy Wallace (Gene Raymond). When Tommy leaves for New York, Sadie follows him but is quick to discover him in the arms of a vaudeville showgirl (Esther Ralston). Down on her luck and devastated, Sadie decides to stay in New York and make the best of it, getting a job at a local nightclub. Sadie immediately catches the eye of Jack Brennan (Edward Arnold), the alcoholic owner of the nightclub. Jack, who is a lonely millionaire, falls head-over-heels for the gorgeous working girl. When Jack proposes, Sadie reluctantly agrees, ready to give up on true love and marry for money. But once she becomes Mrs. Brennan, Sadie is forced to endure the malicious gossip of Jack's friends, who think she is a golddigger.
