Shocking and highly controversial at the time of release, The Snake Pit broke new ground in Hollywood cinema for its depiction of mental illness and its treatment. A powerful film about the life of a madman and how it's possible to reach a state of understanding and overcome one's psychological issues. The film incorporates noir elements such as a narrator's voice and retrospective storytelling, where we, like the protagonist herself, discover important circumstances that lead to understanding her condition. Olivia de Havilland is absolutely brilliant in her role. ()
