Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut focuses on how the war affects the morals and emotions of individuals. Danijel and Alja have been lovers, but the Bosnian war finds them on the opposite sides of the conflict. Whereas Danijel serves as an officer in Serbian-Bosnian army, Alja hides with her sister in her flat. As the conflict keeps pressing on everyone, their relation changes. Things they once had in common now begin to fade away. The lovers meet again when Danjiel commands the unit that evicts Alja to a prison camp. (Febiofest)

English I have the feeling that Angelina Jolie watched Clint Eastwood very closely during the making of Changeling and made her debut more or less in his style. In a matter-of-fact way, without any need for a shaky camera, in the style of an unbiased observer. I like that a lot. Sure, the story is simple and the conflict is only lightly sketched, but there's just enough to make it clear who's who and who's against whom, and to make the outcome as compelling as possible. The performers in the main roles (especially Zana Marjanovic) help a lot (besides the mentioned Eastwood-esque direction), and Gabriel Yared's music also gets bonus points. It was good. ()
