Maximum Conviction

Steven Seagal and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. It sounds like a pretty good casting, something that could be pulled off. Unfortunately, I found out that Steven Seagal won't be my favorite action hero. I have known this for a while, but this is the film that just confirmed it for me. I haven't seen much of Seagal lately, because I didn't have a reason to, but when I came across this news, I said to myself: "Why not?" So I gave it a try, wasted my time, and turned off the movie at the end. Steven Seagal doesn't fit me, but Stone Cold was a much better wrestler than action actor. He's like a walking statue who delivers just one funny line throughout the entire film, which is very little for a low-budget movie and it shows. Seagal produced the film himself, and I don't think he lost much because for the prison environment, all you need is one building that you adapt a little, sometimes not even that, actors who didn't even have to learn how to act, thinking they are good, well, and finally some villain who could go up against those aging heroes, whom in this case I simply don't wish the best. It all looks beautifully simple, and it is beautifully simple. The film didn't bring anything more, and it didn't have to. After all, Seagal is in it, which must be enough for his die-hard fans. We live in turbulent times, where old proven certainties are collapsing, but there are still a few of them left for moviegoers. If you want to watch a current Seagal movie, you have to be aware that your hero has long been in cheap, unambitious, and ultra-B movies. His films were never smart, but in the early days, he at least had a decent physique and a relatively decent script within the genre. Today, he has reached the point where thinking about even the most elementary logic of the story is not advisable, and the absence of his physicality is replaced by merciful editing and the presence of action buddies, who are supposed to take over Steven's function. I decided to watch this when I needed to flush my brain after weeks of stress from house renovations, and I knew what I was getting into, so I definitely didn't feel disappointed. It can even be said that this trash is more merciful and likable than what I dealt with when watching Fantastic Four on the same day. However, the script idiocy and literal dialogues ("Cut off his finger!" - "Aaah, you cut off my finger!") are unintentionally amusing at certain moments. Overall impression: 10%. (04/02/2018)
