Australian adventure drama directed by John Curran and starring Mia Wasikowska. Feeling estranged from the Australian urban culture, Robyn Davidson (Wasikowska) embarks on a trek over the harsh and arid landscape of the outback from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean. Accompanied only by four camels and her dog, she meets a number of people along the way including Mr. Eddy (Roly Mintuma), an Aboriginal man who imparts some important local wisdom to her, and Rick Smolan (Adam Driver), an ambitious National Geographic photographer who is asked to document her journey for the magazine. English I was really excited about Tracks. The story hits close to home when it comes to travelling and so I was really curious to see the creators adapt it into a movie. The result certainly isn’t a bad movie. It beautifully introduces the relationship of a traveler Robyn and a photographer from National Geographic who would rather take pictures than help Robyn drag a camel out of a desert marsh. This relationship with the photographer was annoying at all the same moments when Robyn found it annoying, too, and it was okay when Robyn could deal with all his eccentricities. By the way, Mia Wasikowska was amazing as Robyn. What was worse was the directing that made this journey into something incredibly mystical and added unnecessary ethereal musical numbers at the wrong moments. Another issue was also the journey that Robyn decided to venture on. Her approach to the camels was certainly fair enough (at least in her eyes), but taking a dog along was purely selfish and it makes it hard to root for Robyn 100%. In any case, the movie was definitely interesting and it’s definitely worth watching. ()
