It is clear from the one day spent with twelve-year-old Caterine that her life is eventful. Her numerous family members – six siblings from an infant to those almost adult, her erotomaniac father living on public aid, and her unemployed mother – live in a two-bedroom flat in a poor suburb of the Sardinian capital, Cagliari. This masterfully composed narrative about family injustice is completed by Caterine's increasing fear for her secret love, who is to be killed by her own brother. Fear is mixed with irony, and the child's view accurately pinpoints the heart of the time and place, transforming this mosaic of characters and tales into a fresh and valuable testimony to the core of the evil, and to love in an unjustly stratified society.
