Nazif and Senada live with their two daughters in a dilapidated house in a remote Bosnian village. The father tries to keep the family fed by collecting scrap iron. One day, however, he has to bring the pregnant Senada to the hospital in nearby Tuzla. Because the family does not have health insurance, Senada has to pay 500 euros for her operation, and the hospital staff has no understanding for the poor Roma family’s situation. Nazif has just a few days to try to find a way out and save Senada’s life.... In his fifth feature film, director Danis Tanović takes advantage of the possibility of looking at real human tragedy as an engaged documentary filmmaker. The main roles in this critique of contemporary Bosnia’s broken moral compass are played by non-actors: Nazif Mujić and Senada Alimanović play themselves. At the 2013 Berlinale, the film was awarded the Jury Grand Prix, as well as a Best Actor Silver Bear for Mujić. (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)

English This is quite a powerful episode from life. We can argue about the extent to which the protagonists' inertia is self-inflicted, but the way Danis Tanović portrays the hopelessness of their situation, through the seeming banalities of everyday life, to the desperate steps people are willing to take to save their loved ones, simply works. It’s not that I was fundamentally moved by it - the film isn't trying to do that - but it certainly did make me think. ()

English The best social dramas take place in landfills this year. Uncompromising verism, in which at first I was a little bothered by the thematic presence of the camera (in contrast to passages that adversely work with purely cinematic procedures), but in the end it captivated me with a combination of urgency and lethargy. This is another one of those films that opens up the possibility of several attitudes, does not introduce any of them and offers the most important thing - a raw section of reality, which the viewer must "experience" and process himself. Tanović is certainly not as skilled a mediator of "social distress" as, for example, Fliegauf, but here he managed to exactly hit the mark. [80%] ()

English It's a pretty simple, though at first glance quite powerful, story about how things can turn out when you can't afford proper health care. It's good how it's filmed with non-actors - at least I think so - because it comes across quite authentically. However, when the film ended, I suddenly realized that it didn't do anything for me. ()
