ABCD: Any Body Can Dance

It doesn't have a script, but it handles the functioning sub-genre of teen dance comedies perfectly. There’s nothing missing and there’s nothing excessive, and yet it is perfectly applied to Bollywood. We all know the Glee format that was introduced to us years ago on VHS along with Sister Act 2. The young and restless are divided into two camps - the street people and the untamed are the ones who must find their team spirit and add new meaning to the life of the main character, who has lost his ideals (and is an accomplished dance master). His rival is the logic-corrupted leader of group number two, which also dances great, but despite having a fancy gym and a blonde hermaphrodite in rainbow sweatpants as a choreographer, they lack the team spirit and the heart. And now it's on! The street dancers are finding their humility and respect for their teacher, and even learning not to wrestle with each other, though they were still doing so routinely during this year's Ganesh celebrations. There’s a hint of young love here and there, and a lesson that cigarettes and drugs are bad. Exactly according to the prescribed instructions, these nameless wonders of yesterday are gaining popularity on the podiums of the current Dance Dil Se competition. It’s a classic blend of masala spices that can handle light satire on the state of interpersonal relationships, farce, and serious moments. But most importantly there are great dance numbers, which is what this is all about in the first place. I almost forgot the appeal to every Indian's heart that will be made during the grand finale in the classical spirit. (12/06/2013)
