Plots(1)

The thirteen-episode series AŽ PO UŠI (Head Over Heels), another of HBO Europe's original live-action productions, depicts complex sexual relationships in contemporary central Europe. The story, directed by acclaimed Czech director Jan Hřebejk, forms three intertwined love triangles. The resulting mosaic, which doesn't limit itself to heterosexual relationships, boasts a top-of-the-league cast. The heroine - the unhitched Šárka, who works in an ad agency - is played by Aňa Geislerová. The artist Jakub, with whom Šárka struggles for a deeper relationship, will be depicted by Jiří Havelka. Jakub's calculating girlfriend, who forces her way into Jakub's affections, is played by Lenka Krobotová. Another triangle forms between the womanizing car-dealership owner Milan (Hynek Čermák), his unhappy wife Zuzana (Jitka Čvančarová), and the complex-ridden Ema (Anna Polívková), who begins an unusual erotic affair with Milan, while his cheated-on and disoriented wife succumbs to the charms of a lesbian masseuse (Jana Kolesárová). This drama is full of unusual characters, depicts uncommon professions, takes place in attractive locations, and takes advantage of Prague's picturesque exteriors. The story explains varying motives for emotional attachments, for infidelity, and for various forms of romantic disillusionment. It depicts erotic thrill-seeking, altruistic sacrifices for others, and the eternal human longing for love. (official distributor synopsis)

Head over Heels (2014)

English I can’t say I’m overly enthusiastic by this series. Season 1 was still slightly above average, there were some funny moments, but also a number of disappointing and unconvincing acting performances. However, the quality dropped significantly in Season 2. There was less humor, and it was somewhat cumbersome and unpleasantly predictable. The only constant of both seasons was Hynek Čermák, whose performance was brilliant and entertaining all along. ()

Season 1 (2014) (S01)

English Season 1 was rather disappointing. I was expecting a better performance from this line-up, but the whole affair was highly unbalanced. Until Episode 5 almost everything was wrong, then things got better, but the scenes with Šárka and Jakub were an ordeal for me. I think the best performance was delivered by Hynek Čermák, his Milan really kept me entertained. Anna Polívková and her Ema (Sid) made sure I had some good laughs and Jitka Čvančarová added subtle eroticism to the whole mixture. The script was nothing to write home about, though I admit it could have been much worse, but then there was also the ending with its prospect of universal happiness. To sum it up, it was slightly above average by Czech standards, with a few really good moments. Surprisingly, I quite enjoyed it. ()

Episode 1 (2014) (S01E01)

English The first episode really disappointed me, even though I was excited about the cast and the director, the series started off incredibly stupid with a scene featuring an idiotic cyclist, followed by a catastrophically bad dialogue between Ana Geislerova and Jiri Havelka. After this introduction, I really wanted to stop watching, but luckily Anna Polivkova managed to entertain me, Jitka Cvarcova appeared, who I always enjoy watching, as usual, Hynek Cermak impressed me, and in the end, this lineup managed to earn two stars through hard work. "I have a mouth like a cross between a panda and a squirrel." ()

Episode 2 (2014) (S01E02)

English There have been practically no changes compared to the previous episode. Hynek Čermák delivers the best acting performance out of all the participants, Anna Polívková is the funniest, and Jitka Čvančarová is the sexiest. So those were the positives. The script remains strangely barren, and the scenes with Aňa Geislerová and Jiří Havelka raise suspicions in me that their characters suffer from a personality disorder. ()

Episode 3 (2014) (S01E03)

English This time I added one star because Lenka Krobotová revived the terrifying suffering of the Geislerová/Havelka duo and because I received valuable advice in life that it is good to dilute strong juice with vodka. While I'm quite bothered when I have to watch love between two guys, lesbians have never evoked negative feelings in me, so I evaluate the embryo of something during the massage positively. ()

Episode 4 (2014) (S01E04)

English But seriously, I would seriously cancel those desperate meetings by the Vltava River, they unnecessarily force me to decrease my rating. The Jaguar and the Mustang did manage to entertain me in some places, but overall, nothing amazing was happening. Hynek Čermák seems unquestionably the most convincing in the series, and Milan's concept of anniversaries must be a dream for every romantically inclined woman. "I can't help it that I'm attractive." ()

Episode 5 (2014) (S01E05)

English The fifth episode opened with a scene from the gym and the subsequent journey of Emina home, which made me laugh a lot, it was great. I discovered that Lenka Krobotová excellently dispels the boredom that constantly surrounds Jiří Havelka. In the most interesting storyline so far, the lesbian experiment is changing, unlike other matters, it appears genuine. ()

Episode 6 (2014) (S01E06)

English I thought that maybe the situation could improve and the decline to the level of the first episode would not happen again. The plot, if you can call it that, was completely meaningless and besides the romantic meetings over the comatose patient, nothing entertained me. Currently, two things are keeping me watching the series: the length of the episodes and the fact that if I made it halfway, I have to endure until the end. ()

Episode 7 (2014) (S01E07)

English The seventh episode was the best so far, Milan's depression was great, and the liquidation of Christmas collections was perfect. Somehow, I missed the reason why Šárka and Jiří were at Jakub's rental/repair shop, I didn't quite understand this part. Zuzana and Linda clearly overshadowed the company party and I'm curious about what will happen with the Jaguar. ()

Episode 8 (2014) (S01E08)

English Ema finally woke up and immediately entertained me. Anna Polívková is unlucky in that she inherited such strong genes from her father. Her nose could be a problem, but that underbite... Milan is truly a case, his depression and enthusiasm amuse me, and I'm already looking forward to when he finds out the truth. It's clear from that that the series is starting to entertain me against my will (at least part of it). ()

Episode 9 (2014) (S01E09)

English The shortcomings persisted even in the ninth episode, so under normal circumstances, I would rate it three stars, but a few things added up and this is the result. Jitka Čvančarová came up with a great idea, Milan had a revelation, and I can't get the lazy Sida out of my head. The short fight over the refrigerator door was excellent and I finally had a good laugh. ()

Episode 10 (2014) (S01E10)

English This time the episode was not as remarkable as the previous one (measured by funny moments), but I must admit that I still enjoyed it. Mira007 wrote it perfectly, complaining to his wife about his mistress, that's extreme, but it's clear that it releases more adrenaline than bungee jumping. ()

Episode 11 (2014) (S01E11)

English It is a fact that the whole series started as a disaster and continued similarly, but some positive moments occasionally emerged. The eleventh episode, like the ninth, managed to amuse me. Milan is faultless, and the final brawl in Šárka's apartment was great. And I haven't even mentioned Sid. ()

Episode 12 (2014) (S01E12)

English The twelfth episode was standard, there were no great jokes that would refresh the episode, so a rather melancholic mood prevailed throughout, although it is true that the Zuzana-Linda-Milan action managed to entertain. If everything is to be resolved in the next episode, I suspect a rushed conclusion. ()

Episode 13 (2014) (S01E13)

English Well, I know that Jan Hřebejk claims that in a good comedy there must also be some tragedy for contrast, but this series wasn't that funny and there were quite a few contrasts there, so the killing of the alcoholic seemed completely unnecessary to me. Well, on the other hand, it was faster than cirrhosis. ()

Season 2 (2017) (S02)

English Season 2 was significantly weaker compared to the first one. There was noticeably less quality humor. Unfortunately, there was still the same amount of forced acting performances. The writing was borderline pathetic in places, and I think it would have been much better to end the series after the first season and bow out gracefully. Season 2 seemed to be only recycling the material from the first one, and not even the attempt to spice things up by adding new characters was successful. Despite not having high expectations, I was disappointed with the result. The only thing I loved was the performance of Hynek Čermák who was excellent. ()
