Jean Gabin here demonstrates his mastery and that casual stance, which, however, you could easily swallow, just like that romantic stance. The film itself, however, is not such a unique one, it simply excellently captures the place and relationships between the individual characters. The fatal ending then seems inevitable, and one realizes what can be done for love, or rather its loss.
