Pauline Kael once characterized the French adventure film Fanfan the Tulip as a "Louis XV western". This is a pretty broad interpretation, though it is true that the film never stops moving--an excellent method of sustaining audience attention and plugging up the plot holes. Gerard Philipe plays Fanfan, a handsome, athletic and self-impressed young peasant soldier. Fanfan is as adept in the boudoir as on the battlefield; it has been prophesied that he will wed the king's daughter, thus he wants to get as much practice as possible. Fanfan's many conquests include Gina Lollobridgida and Genevieve Page, which may be why this film did so well in the States. (official distributor synopsis)

France’s acting icon in his best and most famous role. Entertainment that still works today and that Delon successfully continued in The Black Tulip. Humour, action and a beautiful Gina Lollobrigida, what else can you ask for?

I haven't blushed like that in a long time, because Gina's costume shows more than Sophia splashing gallons of seawater on her huge breasts in other movies.

Perhaps if I had seen the film as a child, which I don't remember, I would have had a different relationship with it and enjoyed its action - I must admit that the sword fights are great - and its humor. But maybe I'm just too old for it now, I don't know, but this just didn't really impress me. It's just nice entertainment with a decent hero and a beautiful heroine.
