Free Fall

Plots(1)

"What tea do you want? We've got some mint tea," an old woman mutters to her apathetic husband, with whom she shares her cluttered home. She then goes up to the roof of her apartment block, from where she surveys the evening skyline over smog-veiled Budapest. And she jumps. We catch a fleeting glimpse of the other flats as the woman plunges past their windows – but we'll be seeing them again, one after the other, long enough to put a name to the "diagnosis" which shapes their inhabitants, all of whom are – regrettably, it has to be said – typical models of modern society. While given clear distinctions, the stories present numerous parallels. Seen in grotesque hyperbole, we are presented with a mockery of idle messianism and indifference – a spit in the face of hypocrisy. This highly imaginative, fine-tuned and, at the same time, unassuming film comes up with provocative ideas, while nothing about it would superficially cause the least offence. Sometimes not even jumping off a roof will do any good. (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)

English If you know what to expect from Pálfi (e.g., if you have seen Taxidermia), Free Fall will not surprise you much. Seven bizarre stories take place in it, which, in a comedic-satirical way, point to pathological phenomena and scandals in human society, but only three of them are downright amusing. Most of them end with a weird point exactly in Pálfi's fantasy style, which may shock more sensitive viewers (especially female viewers), while for others it will be a trigger for laughter. However, you will forget half of those points as soon as you leave the cinema. The electronic music is great. ()

English (49th KVIFF) Bizarre, but not very tight entertainment in many ways. Two days later I’m already having trouble putting together what the “tales” were actually about. Taking seven ideas, wrapping them in “something” and “bunching” them together unfortunately is not enough for a feature film. But I didn’t get bored. ()
