British war comedy based on the BBC television sitcom directed by Oliver Parker. Set in 1944, leading on from the end of the television series, the film follows glamorous journalist Rose Winters (Catherine Zeta-Jones) as she is sent to report on the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, which has been suffering from low morale. Shortly after, however, MI5 discovers that a German spy is hiding in the town, giving the platoon a chance to effect real change in the war before it draws to a close. Toby Jones takes up the mantle of Captain Mainwaring, with fellow Home Guard members played by Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Tom Courtenay, Mark Gatiss, Blake Harrison, Daniel Mays and Bill Paterson. The film also sees Frank Williams and Ian Lavender reprise their roles from the original series as the Reverend Timothy Farthing and the now promoted Brigadier Pritchard, respectively. English Such a fairly pleasant comedy, which has the main advantage of having interesting actors. Unfortunately, the film is quite predictable and it doesn't manage to really criticize harshly or truly entertain. It's kind of restrained, as if the film didn't really want to offend anyone, but could have done so nicely. ()
