Child psychologist Mary (Naomi Watts) is trying to put her life back together after losing her husband in a car accident, which left her teenage son (Charlie Heaton) in a coma. Soon after she starts seeing a new patient, Tom (Jacob Tremblay), a little boy grieving after his mother's death, but he goes missing during a winter storm and is presumed to be dead. Mary starts hearing his voice in her house and catching glimpses of him. She finds her mental strength put to the test when more mysterious things begin happening as she's trapped in her isolated home during the raging storm with her only link to the outside world being her own doctor (Oliver Platt). It almost seems like it could almost be a suspenseful thriller at the beginning. But really only almost. Then the film gets bogged down by its script, which is just stupid and mostly boring. Naomi Watts can try as hard as she wants, but she just can't make anything more out of this. Perhaps her nudity will grab the audience's attention for a bit, but then there's a long stretch of nothing. And then it's over.
