A Matter of the Soul is the first film made from a script written by the festival's former honorary president Ingmar Bergman after his death in 2007 and it's the first ever in which he wasn't involved in production. That in itself makes the debutante Bénédicte Acola's film a world event. It's also a very interesting film: Sophie Marceau performs strongly as Viktoria—a role originally thought with Liv Ullmann in mind. She is an angst-ridden woman tortured by loneliness and a complicated love relationship. She goes in and out of a dreamworld. Bergman wanted to film A Matter of the Soul (the script was written in 1970) in one take, but he only completed it as a radio theater. Now we can enjoy Viktoria's feverish monolog in film form at last. (Göteborg Film Festival)
