Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats (LaBeouf) is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that's not green and doesn't have a lake. Once there, he's thrown headlong into the adventure of his life when he and his colorful campmates -- Squid, Armpit, Zigzag, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zero -- must dig a hole a day to keep the warden at bay. English If the historical flashbacks didn't have so much space, two problems would have been avoided: the excessive runtime and the hold back from the more interesting line in the camp. ()

English Holes is a likeable fantasy comedy with superbly cast actors who excel in the main adult roles. The problem here is that the real main characters are children, but due to its subject matter, the film is not for kids. Not that it would be inappropriate for them, but it doesn’t tell them anything. Holes is more of an unusual fairy tale for adults, a tasteful, laid-back and skilfully filmed movie with distinctive charm. And an overly long runtime. ()
