This original brilliant and disturbing George Sluizer's masterpiece is regarded as one of the best suspense thrillers ever made. Based on the novel 'The Golend Egg' by Tim Krabbe, The Vanishing is the ultimate tribute to Alfred Hitchcock with the ending to prove it. Whilst touring in France, a young couple (Rex and Saskia) stop for a break at a roadside service station. Saskia leaves Rex to browse around the shops and vanishes leaving no clues as to her whereabouts. Three years later Rex begins to receive taunting postcards from Saskia's supposed abductor and is drawn into a terrifying battle of cat and mouse in his desperate quest to discover the fate of his missing lover. English An interesting and very “European” dramatic thriller. The only serious issue I had with it were the bland actors and their roles. The characters felt weirdly written, which is something very usual in old dark European films – you never come across a normal person. The director plays quite a lot with the atmosphere (very good at times, then something happens and it’s gone), and instead of focusing on the pace, he creates characters with dubious psychology. I can’t say that it fully worked on me. 7/10 ()
