At times amusing but also somber, Orange Candy is an examination of the complexities related to the widening gap between generations, the breakdown of family relations, confrontation and coexistence, and even love and marriage. The film explores these perennial problems in various scenes that occur during the short period of time in which a patient and a paramedic ride in an ambulance to their destination.
Satya, a young paramedic, helps transfer Kailasam, an ailing middle-aged man, to the hospital. But their journey proves to be a lesson about life. Satya, on top of the trouble he is having with his fiancé, is feeling remorse for not having made peace with his late father. Affluent and obstinate Kailasam is having trouble with his son and lives a forsaken life. Although Kailasam does in fact have a chronic disease, the real reason he calls for an ambulance is because he has been deprived of familial love. Orange Candy imparts the philosophy of this wise old man, emphasizing that rather than fearing death we should relish in the beauty of life. (Busan International Film Festival)
