Even though her ridiculously wealthy family tries to give her everything, it's not until the sheltered Wakaba Kohashi fails to get into an upscale school that she finds what she really needed: a group of friends who want to know the real her, and not her status. Her new school mates may not be up to date on haute couture, but Wakaba is enthralled by their knowledge about the outside world, including the flashy "gyaru" fashion. Soon, Wakaba is helping (or TRYING to help) her newfound friends with their newfound high school girl problems. From helping innocent Moeko though gymnastics, standing in for Nao in a beauty contest, and inadvertently helping Mao act like a rich girl, to simply enjoying the joys of girl talk and sharing ice cream, there's a whole new world of everyday wonders waiting to be discovered in WAKABA*GIRL! English Wakaba Girl is another one of those quiet slice-of-life comedies. It relies mainly on its cute characters and presents a contradictory female protagonist. Despite being from a very rich family, she is interested in very ordinary things and especially in "Gyaru", which, if I understood Wikipedia correctly, is a Japanese fashion subculture for the youth, associated with a kind of rebellion. It means dyed hair, painted and decorated nails, bright clothes, and lots of make-up, so probably something resembling the style of fifteen-year-old girls at Central European discos today. I quite liked this anime series, and I found Wakaba's friends and Wakaba in particular very cute. Furthermore, the eight-minute running time for each episode is just right for me with a show like this because I do not find it too short and also not long enough to start getting bored. The animation was cute, and the soundtrack, which is dominated by what I think is a very nice, cheerful, and addictive opening, was very easy to listen to. Of all the short anime series I have seen to date, Wakaba Girl is definitely the best. 8/10. ()
